In 2009 we awoke a giant. In 2010, we’re whipping that giant into shape and pushing it towards its full potential!

The giant is Moose Mountain. For over a decade, with over 1800 vertical feet of shredable goodness, Moose has served as a prime riding spot for Calgary and area’s freeriders, downhillers, and cross-country rippers alike. Thanks to the hard work and vision of the area’s core builders and riders, Moose Mountain has been a growing center of awesomeness for many. Much of the mountain’s development had been occurring somewhat under the radar with fingers crossed, but there was just too much potential to keep under wraps and too much at stake to not legitimize the whole deal.
About this time last year, a group of us builders and riders got together to wake this giant; to bring the Moose into the light and revere it for all its glory. We formed the
Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society and our mission:
To advocate, develop, and maintain mountain bike trails and to promote healthy, active, fun, and environmentally responsible community involvement. (Translation: To build, shred, and high-five!) The response was insane! We have received incredible support from the government, adjacent user groups, and of course – the riding community at large. In short order, we made great strides. Here’s a look at some of our key accomplishments from 2009:
- We gathered 135 stoked MMBTS members (thanks to all of you!)
- We got the green light from Alberta Sustainable Resources Development (SRD) to steward and develop the trails (mission part 1 – check!)
- We held 4 MMBTS trail days (about 1000 hours of volunteer trail love) and the annual two-knee race (mission part 2 – check!)
- We applied for, received, and managed a grant from the National Trail Coalition and the Alberta Government for $70,000 and successfully pumped that money directly into the trails (mission impossible – check!)
That $70,000 was spent between late September and December 2009. The Moose got a makeover of epic proportions before slipping deep into its winter beauty sleep. If you weren’t out for any rips late last fall, you’ll be in for a few nice surprises come spring!
Speaking of spring - the new riding season is approaching! We’re getting ready to unleash the Moose for 2010 and we need your help!
To get things rolling, we are holding our first ever Annual General Meeting on March 26 at the Shaganapi Community Hall in Calgary. We’re going to review all the highlights of 2009, go over our plans and opportunities for an awesome 2010, get as much feedback and input from the community as you can bring us, and then kick back for some laughs and get our stoke on for 2010.

MMBTS exists only to serve the trails and ultimately the riders. We want awesome trails and happy shredders. The more involvement, support, and direction you bring to the table – the better our riding experience becomes. Mountain biking has been gaining huge momentum with governments, industry, and the public at large – the iron is hot and we want to keep striking! So come on out, give your trails and riding community some thought, and put it on the table!
